About Me.
My name is Kofi Abrefah, I am 21 years old, a second year university student in British Columbia, Canada and the founder of Rosewood Ghana foundation. A few years ago my grandmother, Margaret was diagnosed with glaucoma and cataracts which came as a shock to the entire family. In an attempt to help her recover my family band together and used every available resource to ensure she got the best healthcare possible from around the country which wasn’t cheap. Unfortunately, our efforts were of no avail due to the inconsistencies with multiple differing diagnosis’ as well as lack of testing before her condition escalated. I started the Margaret’s Eyes program to help provide proper eye testing and resources to individuals both young and old in Ghana. Early detection and treatment is key, this support hopefully may help some individuals from suffering the same fate as my Grandmother.
Growing up, sports were a massive part of my identity. I played every sport I could which provided me with various different skills and experiences that has made me who I am today. However, as I got older I began to recognize that not everyone has equal access to the opportunities and resources needed to fully experience the lessons and benefits of sports. This realization became even more clear in the summer of 2018 when I spent the summer playing soccer in Ghana. I found it very disheartening how many children could not pursue their ambitions simply due to the lack of resources provided to them. This realization sparked a desire within me to attempt to level the playing field and ensure that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the chance to participate in and benefit from sports as I did as a when I was young. Therefore, I began the Sports Equipment Donation program that seeks to provide easy access to children in Ghana.
Both my parents have a social work background so supporting people has always been a conversation in our home. These conversations made me think about what I can do to help people who need access to food, support when fleeing abusive situations, mental health etc. Rosewood foundation hopes to work with different organizations to help Ghanaians who are under privileged receive access to various social services programs.
